Spotlight on Hobbies: Creating SPACES for young people’s wellbeing

With young people’s wellbeing in the UK lagging substantially and stubbornly behind peers internationally, it’s time to take urgent action to address this crisis.

By regularly measuring and taking the pulse of young people’s wellbeing through the #BeeWell survey, we know that taking part in a range of hobbies, from arts, culture and entertainment, to physical activity, movement and football, can be beneficial for young people’s wellbeing.

But not everyone has access to these types of activities, and there are inequalities in participation. To ensure all young people have access to opportunities to participate in arts, culture, entertainment and sport (SPACES) for their wellbeing, young people and practitioners need the backing of researchers, educators, funders and policymakers. And this effort must start with listening to young people themselves.

Professor Neil Humphrey, academic lead for #BeeWell, Stephanie Ray, one of our PhD researchers, and Samuel Hugh-Jones, have explored this topic in a recent blog for Policy @ Manchester. You can read the full piece here.

Don’t forget, on October 8th, we’ll also be joined by Kirith Entwistle, MP for Bolton North East, and partners at Football Beyond Borders, Factory International and Creatives Now CIC, and young people involved in these programmes, to discuss this topic and how we can best support young people to take part in arts, culture, entertainment and sports.
