Celebrating our “Spotlight On Success”… and introducing our “Spotlight On Healthy Choices”

Over the last two months, we’ve heard some great stories from young people as part of our Spotlight On Success, including our Greater Manchester Youth Steering Group’s ‘everyday success’ project (more info below) and the launch of the fantastic Wellbeing Club Podcast in HIPS – have a listen here if you missed it.

What does ‘everyday success’ mean to young people in Greater Manchester?

We’re so pleased to share a project from our GM #BeeWell Youth Steering Group, exploring what ‘everyday success’ looks like for young people! For some young people, success might mean doing well at school, getting good grades, going to university, and getting a good job – but they aren’t the only ways in which young people are successful.

We used the #BeeWell data to explore three things that can mean success- feeling good about yourself, having a place to go to talk about worries or mental health concerns, and volunteering. We have then brought together a series of case studies that explore these themes, written by and for young people.

You can find all of these stories on our website, here: Everyday Success Project – #BeeWell.

You can also watch the video below for reflections from #BeeWell partners and young people on the theme of success.

Young people take to the airwaves on Express FM

A group of young people have been working with the Council for Social Responsibility and #BeeWell to develop a podcast by young people for young people. The Wellbeing Club has been designed to explore various wellbeing topics, where members discuss #BeeWell data and interview professionals who are experts in that field.

Three members were invited to Portsmouth’s Express FM studio to be interviewed by Hannah Playfoot-Murray. Listen to the episode here or check out the full episode playlist here.

To find out more about this project, read our blog post.

For July and August, we’re shifting our focus to Healthy Choices, thinking about why this is important for young people’s wellbeing, and celebrating all the great work our partners and schools are doing to support young people to make healthy choices.

If you have a story to share, please get in touch via email!

Working with schools to explore how school belonging supports young people’s wellbeing

Following on from our #BeeWell “Spotlight On School Belonging”, we recently held a local learning session for Greater Manchester schools, where we took a closer look at what the school belonging data told us in the region and discussed shared learning and challenges on boosting a sense of belonging at school.

On the day, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls shared with us what they have done to strengthen a sense of school belonging, and what they hope to do more of in the future. You can read the full case study from Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, here.

Young people take charge: Commissioning new activities across HIPS

Following a voting process where over 1,000 young people identified the areas they thought would make a positive impact to their wellbeing, our HIPS steering group ‘Youth Matters’ sorted the applications and made recommendations to allocate funding to projects.

Various initiatives are now underway across HIPS with young people who previously weren’t engaging in physical activity attending gym sessions, receiving mental health support from trained practitioners at music studios, participating in arts sessions, drama workshops around neurodiversity and new activities such as glow volleyball.

Find out more here.

New #BeeWell research explores the impact of where young people live on wellbeing outcomes.

New research from The University of Manchester has found that young people’s mental wellbeing is closely linked to the neighbourhoods they live in.

A key finding was that living in a more deprived neighbourhood significantly increases the chances of teenagers experiencing consistently low or deteriorating life satisfaction but actually decreased risk of mild emotional difficulties.

Lead researcher Dr Christopher Knowles said the study challenges the belief that all adolescents face the same mental health decline. Instead, it highlights the importance of tailored, neighbourhood-level interventions. Co-author Dr Emma Thornton added that the findings offer a “clear roadmap for change,” calling for targeted investment in housing, green spaces, and community support to help more young people thrive.

Update on our mailing list data

As part of #BeeWell’s continuing development, we are looking to upgrade the way in which we manage our newsletter and our wider interactions with our supporters and partners. Until now, we have operated our mailing list from the Gregson Family Foundation (GFF) but we are now looking to implement a Client Relationship Management system housed in The University of Manchester.
