As part of Girlguiding’s exciting new strategy and vision they aim to develop Girlguiding inspired experiences. This includes a new innovative programme called ‘Girls Solve’ focusing on young women’s self-esteem.
Utilising data from the #BeeWell survey, three schools from Hampshire and Southampton were identified to participate in the Girlguiding project. One of the schools was Park Community School in Havant, where a group of Year 8 girls were brought together. They focused on the areas that have a big impact on school and the lives of young people.
The ‘Girls Solve’ project completed nine interactive sessions working with local facilitator Stacey Miller Consultancy. They began by gaining a good understanding of the key areas from the #BeeWell survey. Using this they developed ways in which these challenges can be overcome, and as a result the group chose to create ‘No Fear – Tackling Anxiety’. Perfect for the audience of Year 6 students transitioning to secondary during Freshers week.
The girls worked together to plan and present an interactive peer-led assembly covering scenarios in preparation for secondary school. Additionally the group prepared all Year 6 students a goody bag, which contained hints and tips of how to tackle anxiety.
Most importantly everyone worked extremely hard as a team in attempt to make a positive difference to the wider community. Afterwards one participant said:
“The sessions have been really valuable. We have worked with people from outside of our school, built positive relationships and shown great teamwork with students in school that we would not usually work with. We are proud to have made a difference to the Year 6 students”.
The impact of this engagement has led to the girls being involved in delivering programmes with Stacey Miller, raised self-esteem and more involved in school life.
