BeeProud project findings: how schools and youth organisations can better support LGBTQ+ young people

We are excited to share with you the findings from the BeeProud project; a collaborative study conducted by academic researchers at the University of Manchester and young researchers at The Proud Trust in Manchester.

Building on BeeWell survey findings, BeeProud explored the experiences of LGBTQIA+ young people in Greater Manchester.

The BeeProud report provides insights into the everyday challenges LGBTQIA+ young people face, alongside recommendations for schools and youth organisations to better support them.

“It’s important to hear the input of young LGBT people because they’re often the ones who strive for change more and are more determined to change things in society” – W, (him), trans, bisexual

This study focused on the experiences of LGBTQIA+ young people (aged 16-19) living across Greater Manchester, drawing insights from 49 participants through a detailed questionnaire.

Conducted by an LGBTQIA+ led research team including young people from The Proud Trust and the University of Manchester, the study examines themes of visibility, political influences, education, belonging, and everyday prejudice.

Findings reveal that young people navigate a complex balance between visibility and safety, often modifying their self-expression depending on their environment.

Political dynamics significantly impact their lives, particularly in relation to trans healthcare access and broader societal acceptance.

Schools and educational institutions play a crucial role in shaping LGBTQIA+ experiences—both as sources of support and spaces where discrimination persists. A strong sense of belonging is found in LGBTQIA+ community spaces, where identities are normalised and accepted. However, casual LGBTQIA+ discrimination remains prevalent and is often dismissed as humour or overlooked in everyday interactions.

The report highlights key recommendations for schools, youth organisations, policymakers, and public spaces to improve inclusivity and support for LGBTQIA+ youth. These include better LGBTQIA+ education, staff training, the creation of safe spaces, and political advocacy for trans rights.

The study emphasises the need for systemic change to ensure that LGBTQIA+ young people can thrive authentically and safely.
